Description:
The complex (historic building and new building) is the completion of the recovery and redevelopment of the arc of the historic harbor of the city of Genoa. The design theme is the inclusion of a new structure in replacement of an artifact in serious condition and free of any quality in an area of particular historical value. The design solution comes from different operational requirements: on the one hand the spaces are at the service of established shipbuilding activity and, secondly, it is the urban spaces for accommodation and business. The building was demolished and rebuilt on two levels and hosts on one hand service spaces to the shipyard and on the other activities of urban connective with some residential units on the upper floor. From the architectural point of view, the building expresses these differences in use through the construction of a material perimeter wall separating the activities in this established from the side of shipbuilding activities while the remaining portion is defined by a continuous wall of glass and perforated sheet . The headboard of the building faces the urban road network through a blind wall, moved away about a meter from the defined volume, which partially protects the glass front lodging, open-air, the stairs of access to housing units on the upper level.
